Dong Mingguang is easily recognized for his duplicitous anime-like sculptures of playful children. With wide-eyed innocence, Dong Mingguang's children are observed emerging from their innocent world into one filled with violence, deception, and materialism. These children are on the cusp of a harsh awakening filled with difficult moral decisions already being contemplated in their mischievous faces. Through these pensive children, China's reemergence in a public role within this media saturated world is symbolized. No longer able to isolate itself from the outside world, Dong Mingguang expresses the anxiety of a country and its people in a new role. Dong Mingguang was born in 1970 in Shandong Province. He continues to work on photography and sculpture while also teaching in the sculpture department of Shandong Art College.
