An Exploration of Existential Paradoxes
Zheng Hongxiang, born in 1983 in Gaizhou, Liaoning Province, is a contemporary Chinese artist known for his thought-provoking and visually captivating works.
Graduating from the Oil Painting Department of the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in 2006， Zheng has since exhibited his art in prestigious museums and galleries across China, Asia, and Europe.
Zheng's art inquire into the existential paradoxes of contemporary society, exploring the division and dynamics between the individual and the collective. His former works often feature recurring motifs such as a red stage, a gray endless sky, and a disrobed muscular faceless human figure with a red box covering his head. These elements created a sense of tension and passion, reflecting the complex interplay between confinement and freedom.
In his recent works, his subjects are often depicted in mountainous landscapes, where they either attempt to exert control over the environment or engage in conflicts with nature or humanity. The vibrant colors create strong contrasts that draw the viewer into the paintings. Each piece tells a story, and through dynamic movement, vivid colors, and immersive settings, they captivate the observer, inviting them to become a part of the narrative.
Through his art, Zheng seeks to challenge viewers' perceptions and provoke introspection about the social constructs and hierarchies that shape our lives. His unique style, characterized by a renewed theatrical
Baroquesque quality, evokes dreamlike states reminiscent of Freudian analysis. Zheng's paintings are not just visual spectacles but also intellectual explorations of the human condition.
